About

Emily Hales is a published American painter and illustrator. She has done a variety of projects such as illustrations for books, magazines, album artwork etc. When she is not painting or drawing she is fond of making videos, making music, cooking, and writing.

My paintings explore the strangeness and wonder that life brings. They also explore how memories feel to me. How they look familiar to a world we know, but we add our own emotion on to color the memory. You can think of yourself in a certain time and place and you see things differently than they are. You feel it differently too. The more you turn it over in your mind, the more the reality changes. Some parts you can’t remember enough to fill in so you leave them blank and floating. Dreams and memory chop things up and rearrange them. We are expansive, creative, dreamy, and ever changing beings stuck in a physical world of deadlines, alarms, appointments, meetings, and traffic lights. The fitting of those two realities can be strange and uncomfortable but exciting and optimistic.
